Performances
Mandhla
Mandhla. will display a piece exploring the effects of black trauma on queer artists of colour and navigating that pain through the colonial gaze that is violently presented to us through the audiences we perform for. Often times as femmes of colour we feel like vessels that everyone finds emotional release from while leaving specific spaces more empty than we came. Such as Stonewall, a movement fronted and pioneered by femmes of colour, who today, would not be able to reap the benefits. Her performance will be a combination of live singing, spoken word and performative drag, exploring the journey of creation, the effects of trauma and rising above the ashes in a world that is trying to burn us with it.
Mala / Performance Labyeeka
¨Labyeeka Ya Hussein“ ( ¨Oh Hussien¨) is a live performance incorporating painting, dance, and music from Morocco, that explores the struggle of muslim persons with their bodies, genders and faiths. The story piece by trans non binary Shiaa muslims expresses the faith and feeling of their queerness in the struggle and resistance of Ahlu Albayeet. It is a way to look for liberation through the lens of an Islam inherited.
DANIELLE BRATHWAITE-SHIRLEY / Digging For Black Trans Lives
Digging For Black Trans Lives follows the story of unearthing and resurrecting Black Trans bodies buried through history (I wish I could have spoken to you before we lost you). Through animation and sound you join them as they travel through an environment that centers Trans lives, allowing them to meet Characters that have been erased through time.
Lux Venérea / Notre-Dame
NOTRE-DAME is a multimedia piece about the constant feeling of closure to death experienced by trans bodies, and what it is to carry stigma inside and out. She uses a series of weapons in an attempt to “destroy her own inner cathedral”. She will break your heart and make you laugh with jokes as sharp as it’s pieces.
